Solomon Northup（切瓦特·埃加福特 Chiwetel Ejiofor 飾）本來是一個自由人，以演奏小提琴為生，有一個妻子和兩個孩子，生活其樂融融。不料他卻被兩個白人以為馬戲團表演伴奏所騙，去了華盛頓，一覺醒來發現自己成了黑奴。起初他被賣給了Ford先生（本尼迪克特·康伯巴奇 Benedict Cumberbatch 飾），在莊園裏當奴隸。不久又被賣給了素有“黑奴終結者”之稱的Epps先生（邁克爾·法斯賓德 Michael Fassbender 飾），他在種植園裏日複一日地采摘棉花，也目睹了許多黑奴的悲劇。12年過去了，他始終沒有放棄重回自由人的希望，直到遇到了一個思想進步的人士——木匠Bass先生（布拉德·皮特 Brad Pitt 飾）。Solomon是否能結束他身為奴隸的命運？ 本片根據Solomon Northup的真人真事改編。
