卡利多（阿爾?帕西諾 Al Pacino 飾）因販毒而被判入獄30年，在他入獄的第五年，律師大衛（西恩?潘 Sean Penn 飾）將他從監獄救了出來。卡利多出獄後的理想就是賺夠7萬5千美元離開這裏和還清欠大衛的人情。決心洗心革麵的卡利多卻擺脫不了命運的捉弄，當他勉為其難地答應表弟作為旁觀者參加一次毒品交易，他卷入了一場黑吃黑的勾當。當他保住了毒品後，他從毒販那裏獲得了2萬5千美元作為酬勞。
卡利多將這筆錢入股到一家名為天堂樂園的夜總會後，他開始尋找他的女人，凱爾。當卡利多找到凱爾後，兩人的關係在微妙中回旋。這時，大衛收了一位黑手黨首領的錢，答應幫助他的夥伴越獄。於是，大衛找來了卡利多幫忙。雖然凱爾苦苦哀求，為了報恩，卡利多還是答應了去執行這一危險任務……
