在一處偏僻蠻荒的山野角落，有一家名為世緣客店的小客棧。雖然世緣客店地處要衝，客流不斷，但是此地鬧鬼的傳聞甚囂塵上，令許多膽小之人避之不及。這一日，客棧迎來了英氣十足的中州府捕吏齊天遠（黃國強 飾）。此前一段時間，江洋大盜李元甫橫行州府，作惡多端。齊天遠此行的目的正是為了捉拿李元甫歸案。店家態度冷淡，原不欲接納，而天遠執意不肯去，堅決住店。夜幕降臨，天遠在店中偶然遇見美麗的女鬼梅英（董曉燕 飾），並經對方指點發現了埋在後院的屍體。經過一番調查，天遠終於弄清屍體之謎，也發現了店家李應（徐小健 飾）的險惡陰謀……
本片根據《聊齋》中《梅女》的故事改編。
