在科瑞妮（維拉·法米加 Vera Farmiga 飾）還小的時候，對周遭的一切充滿了好奇，遭遇許多成長的困惑，並且接觸了宗教。剛剛成年的她很快遇上愛情，並且匆匆忙忙懷了孕，懵懵懂懂進入婚姻，和一位搖滾樂手成婚，成了一個家庭主婦，也放棄了寫作夢想和宗教信仰。婚後的生活並不似科瑞妮期待一樣好過，她甚至還得帶著嗷嗷待哺的小孩跟著丈夫和一幫音樂朋友參加巡演，經常感到被忽略的失落。巡演途中，一場車禍發生了，一家三口費盡周折幸免於難，令科瑞妮再度產生信教的傾向。開始的一切似乎很快樂，但是經曆教義約束、好友腦癌、外遇萌芽，科瑞妮的信仰始終在動搖……
