警車上，落網的連續殺人犯檟津嚴（緒形拳 飾）神態輕鬆，並在後來的審訊中拒不交代殺死職員柴田與馬場的經過……檟津嚴出身於信奉天主教的漁民家庭，由於宗教歧視，嚴家的小船被沒收，年幼的嚴試圖反抗卻被父親製止，由此父親喪失了在嚴心目中的地位。青年嚴因偷竊美軍設備出獄後與加津子奉子成婚，然而很快又因詐騙入獄。父親為阻止加津子離婚登門拜訪，誰知兩人卻發生了不倫的關係，再次出獄的嚴不齒妻子與父親所為，離家出走，從此開始了伴隨殺人與詐騙的流浪旅程。嚴喬裝大學教授與旅館中的暗娼交好，間歇時仍然犯下累累罪行，而此時與他共居的母子二人，並不知曉身邊人是日本知名的通緝犯……
本片獲1979年日本《電影旬報》十佳電影第一名。
