這部影片講述了荷蘭著名畫家倫勃朗的浪漫情事和職業生涯，並著重講述了他的代表作《夜巡》的創作過程。倫勃朗一直是上流社會的肖像畫家，他擁有接踵而至的訂單，美滿甜蜜的愛情。直到1642年他的妻子為他生下小兒子不久去世，生活開始大轉折。隨之而來的是因為為阿姆斯特丹射擊手公會畫家創作的集體肖像《夜巡》又被顧主告上法庭，使倫勃朗蒙受了事業上最重大的一次挫折。此後他的事業開始衰落，他開始陷於債務之中。人世滄桑、人情冷暖……
